A superbly prepared race track and a talented bunch of wheelmen made for a show full of side-by-side racing and thrilling finishes Saturday as Spoon River Speedway hosted the 31st Annual Tom Knowles Memorial.
The annual event, which brings winged Midwest Open Wheel Association (MOWA) 410 Sprint cars to the track, along with the wild wingless warriors of the POWRi Midget racing series, always brings displays of high speeds by the light open wheel machines. But along with the speeds this year was side-by-side dueling, as the ultra-smooth, multiple groove track allowed the drivers to go all out racing each other lap after lap.
Ashland’s Brandon Roberts has consistently had one of the fastest cars in the Zane’s Auto Service UMP Modified Division at Spoon River Speedway in 2015. So fast, in fact, he has set fast time in qualifying on multiple occasions, including turning the single fastest lap of the year in the division at 14.38 seconds back in May.
But being the fastest car doesn’t always equate to victories, a fact Roberts and his crew know quite well. That’s why it was so satisfying for Roberts to stand in Perkins Seed House Victory Lane Saturday night after dominating the 20-lap feature for his first main event win at the legendary oval. Along with his qualifying quickest and winning his heat, it completed a long-awaited sweep.
“Man, I’ve wanted this one for a long time and it feels good to get it!” Roberts said with a mix of jubilation and relief, “this is the best track to race at…it’s always smooth, it’s always fast, Brad [Denney] gives us a great place to race and I wanted one here so bad.”
This Friday Night August 14th the AMA AllStar National Flat Track Series will invade the Spoon River Speedway. A large field of bikers are expected as they get tuned up for the TT’s on Sunday. Rider’s from coast to coast attended last years event and put on an exciting night of racing on the High Banks of the Spoon with JD Beech taking the main event. We have collected over $1500 for the Dash for Cash so far. This is the only motorcycle race Spoon has all year so you won’t want to miss this exciting night of racing.

A beautiful night of racing started off with Nick Bauman setting fast time in the Pro Late Model division (14.762) and Tommy Duncan would set fast time (15.314) in the Modifieds on a super fast track prepared by track promoter Brad Denney and he would also be doing the announcer duties as BJ Stone was in Reno visiting his Mom for her birthday. Also making a surprise visit after having knee replacement surgery 5 weeks ago was Morey Denney.
Allen Weisser drove his UMP Modified from 11th to 1st in the final segment of the annual “Quick Draw” event at Spoon River Speedway Saturday night to claim his second straight title in the unique event.
The annual event featuring the unique segmented format provided fans with plenty of passing and on track excitement in all divisions, and those races, along with the first visit from the Illinois Lighting Sprints and make up features in several classes from a June rainout provided everyone a full, entertaining night of racing on the smooth, fast, multi-groove high-banked speedway.
A twist to the event this year actually gave the drivers who won in either of the first two segments of racing a chance to “spin the wheel” to determine how many cars would be inverted for the following segment.

Over 100 cars in the pits, a big crowd in the grandstands, a silky smooth race track, nice weather, and post-race fireworks. That alone was enough to make the 4th of July celebration at Spoon River Speedway a great event. Then consider 21 of those 100+ cars were visiting Super Late Models, and add a remembrance and memorial in the name of Gary Cook, Jr., of one of the top UMP Modified racers to have ever circled the mighty high banks of The Spoon, and it was truly a night of great entertainment and tribute.
The Gary Cook, Jr. Memorial races were originally scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, but rain forced the postponement to the July 4th show. 31 UMP Modifieds, 21 UMP Super Late Models, and another 50 Pro Late Models, Pro Modifieds and Hornets took to the track Saturday racing for increased purse money and the honor of winning one of Gary Cook, Jr.’s very own trophies, donated to the event by his father, Gary, Sr., who also took part in the racing show, parading the tribute car he has assembled in his son’s honor during the National Anthem, and then later giving the car it’s first at-speed shakedown in a heat race.
Our next racing Event will be this Saturday Night July 4th. This will be the makeup Gary Cook Jr Memorial from May 24th. Ticket stubs and armbands will be honored from that night. Featured Saturday Night will be the Zane Automotive Service UMP Modifieds and the UMP Super Late Models each running for $1564 to Win. Also on hand will be the Perkins Seed House UMP Pro Late Models for $464 to Win, the Farmington Locker UMP Pro Modifieds for $264 to Win and the Fulton Farm Service ...UMP Hornets for $164 to Win. We will also have our annual fireworks show with over 1000 shots this year. The first 250 paid adults through the front gate will receive an American Flag.
