Under a bright full moon at Spoon River Speedway, Springfield UMP Modified driver Kelly Kovski got what he’s wanted for a long time, something that Todd Bates has already done a bunch of times, and something Bates did again in the UMP Pro Modified division Saturday night.

Kovski won his first ever main event at the high-banked, 3/8 mile clay oval, blasting around early leaders Allen Weisser and Brian Lynn with a high-side dash and then driving a mistake-free race on that top side, winning the Perkins Seed House Modified Feature in dominating fashion.

“I’ve wanted to win one here for a long time, and I’ve had my chances before, so this feels good!” said an exuberant Kovski in the Husqvarna Victory Lane. “I just want to thank the Denney’s for this track, I love this place, it’s a great place to race.”

A-Dog Dominates Quick Draw At The Spoon

Old-school racing made it’s annual visit to Spoon River Speedway Saturday night, in the form of the Quick Draw Specials, a night featuring three segments of racing in each division with inverted starts sending the higher-finishing car in the previous segment to the back of the field for the next segment.

The format is a throwback to the days when the fields were inverted, passing was at a premium, and the fans cheered as drivers charged through the pack. No one did more charging and got more cheering Saturday than Allen “A-Dog” Weisser, the second-generation racer from Peoria, in his #25W UMP Modified.

The yearly special for the Pro Modified Division, named for the late Bill Anderson, a longtime figure at the Speedway, and father of several racing brothers, including still-active son Mark Anderson, is the biggest race for that division at the Speedway, with increased purse money and a big trophy to the winner.

Lodge and Lance Jr Collect the Big Checks at Spoon River Speedway

Steve Lance, Jr. dominated from the outset to win the 25-lap Quick Car Pro Late Model Touring Series event at Spoon River Speedway Sunday night, his second win of a three-event weekend on the tour, and pocketed $1,064 for his efforts. Moline’s Donovan Lodge earned a check in the same amount not long afterwards by putting in a similar dominating effort to win the 25-lap Perkins’ Seed House UMP Modified Feature.

The extra 64 dollars on each winner’s check, and the extra 64 bucks at the end of winner’s amount in the Pro Modified and Hornet Divisions, was in honor of the late Gary Cook, Jr., the 2009 UMP Modified National Champion who lost his battle with cancer a little over a year ago.

The night started with Gary Cook, Sr. getting behind the wheel of a car his son formerly drove, now belonging to Pro Modified driver Matt Parrott, in an emotional tribute during the playing of the National Anthem, a tribute to both his son and to all fighting men and women lost as part of the Memorial Day weekend. Cook, Sr. was joined by numerous Modified and Pro Modified cars following behind.

Bad Brad is Bad Fast in Victory at Spoon River

Spoon May 242014 475

The winningest Late Model driver in Spoon River Speedway didn’t feel like he had a winning car heading into Saturday night’s Monical’s Pizza Pro Late Model feature at the high banked 3/8-mile oval. Just minutes before the division took to the track for that feature, a frustrated Brad Denney said, “still got a lot of work to do to figure out this new car, it’s not doing what I expect it to do, that’s for sure.”

Maybe the car heard the driver’s complaints. Less than 20 minutes later, a smiling Denney took photos and accepted congratulations in Victory Lane after a thrilling race that saw the veteran drive around the pack on the high side, and then duel with Flyin’ Brian Lynn for the final laps to earn the win.

On the other end of the career victory spectrum, the Moos was turned loose in the Monical’s Pizza UMP Pro Late Model feature, as youngster Myles Moos of Hartsburg won his first feature…ever…at the legendary track.
