A Little History on Spoon River Speedway
In 1983 the track was built out of a bean field and leased to four individuals that along with some help from the mine, built what was then known as Dixie Speedway. After one season, Dixie declared bankruptcy so the Denney family had the choice of either letting the track be sold or pay Dixie’s bills off. Spoon River Speedway was established in 1984 by Morey and Gerald Denney. Both of these men put many hours into the speedway while still farming and Morey also working 3rd shift at Cat. Gerald ran the concession stand and mowed the grounds while Morey promoted and maintained the track. In 2009 Gerald started to turn over the concessions to his nephew Brad. Then in 2011 Morey turned over the track prep and promoter duties to his son Brad.
As almost everyone knows Morey Denney’s brother Gerald passed away in November of 2015. Gerald and his son Scott had proposed to Morey that they were willing to sell Gerald’s half of the track but Gerald passed away before this could take place. Scott told Morey he was still willing to sell his half once Gerald’s estate was settled. On December 15th, 2016 Morey Denney became the sole owner of the Spoon River Speedway. Morey will turn 77 on January 25th of 2017. While Morey will still be involved helping at the track, his son Brad will continue to promote, do the track prep, run the concessions and be in charge on race nights.
